Time to Getaway Part 2

My trip to Oklahoma started out in a mini monsoon. It usually takes me about 45 minutes to drive down there, it took almost an hour and a half. My ex Girlfriend is a High priest, that practices the white Wicca belief. Over the years I have studied this and found it very interesting. If you are ever have some spare time search where many Christmas rituals, the Easter bunny and several other Catholic practices really came from you might be surprised.

I was down there about 30 minutes when she started nagging like my ex-wife. She said here moon was in the wrong cycle. I think something else was in the wrong cycle. I put up with this crap for a couple of hours then left. I didn’t want to come back home because I knew I would spend all weekend on this site and not get anything done. I searched for a motel within 30 miles from where I live and found one, at a very good rate in.

I don’t have a clue when I arrived. I brought in 3 laptops, my camera and a bag, dropped them on the floor and was asleep within 30 minutes. I would end up staying here from Friday night until late Sunday afternoon. This town is like a lot of towns close to where I live. It has for the most part very small, died and replaced with manufacturing or industrial plants. The sun was out the next morning so I went out to try to get some shots of something. This was all I could find that was even remotely interesting and these are stretching the word interesting.

I spent a couple of hours driving around the town just killing time before I went back to the motel to tackle the two laptops I had put off for way to long to fix.

I call this multitasking to the max.
The first computer was pretty easy and only took me a couple of hours to put on all the software I mentioned earlier in my post about computer security. This one I charged 50 bucks for so it paid for half of my motel stay. The second one was a freebie for a friend. I put all of the mentioned software on Her computer a couple of years ago. But She never kept it up dated or even used it. She just uses her laptop to play games on. I quit counting after I found over 100 different virus on her computer almost all of the came from the infamous Java. She also had over 1500 invalid registries entries which explained why her computer took so long to boot. This damm computer took me over ten hours to fix.

In the evenings I would just zone out watching the TV until I got sleepy so I did get somewhat relaxed but not what I was looking for.

I didn’t get all I wanted out of this trip but you can’t have everything. I did get those two laptops fixed and out of the way that I have had hanging around for way to long. The rest and relaxation will have to come if my place in the country ever dries out. It has rained again for the last two days so it may be awhile.

Flint Hills Trip Final

The name “Kansas” was derived from the name of this tribe. The name of Topeka, capital city of Kansas, is said to be the Kaw word Tó Ppí Kˀé meaning “a good place to grow potatoes. The Kaw are closely related to the Osage Nation, with whom members often intermarried.

From 1780 to 1830 the Kaw lived at Blue Earth Village on the Kansas River, at the site of present-day Manhattan, Kansas. The Kaw probably moved to the Kansas River Valley to be closer to the buffalo herds on the Great Plains. The tribe increasingly depended upon buffalo hunting for its subsistence and less on agriculture. Also, living on the Kansas River gave them access to a rich territory of fur bearing animals to trade to the French for guns and other commodities. Unfortunately, this movement west also made them more vulnerable to attack from powerful enemies such as the Pawnees. Lewis and Clark noted that they were “reduced by war with their neighbors.” They estimated the Kaw to number 300 men—about 1,500 persons in all.

A disastrous flood in 1844 destroyed most of the land the Kaw had planted and left the tribe destitute. In 1846, the Kaw sold most of their remaining 2,000,000 acres (8,100 km2) of land for $202,000 plus a 256,000 acres (1,040 km2) reservation centered on Council Grove, Kansas. Council Grove is a beautiful area of forests, water, and tall grass prairie, but it was probably the worst location that could have been selected for the already weakened and demoralized tribe. It was a favorite stopping place for the rough-hewn teamsters and traders and voracious merchants on the Santa Fe Trail. The first Kaw arriving there were beaten up by traders. The flourishing whiskey trade in Council Grove also proved to be deleterious. Whites invaded Indian lands and sporadic efforts by soldiers to force them off the reservation were ineffective. In 1860, the Kaw reservation, overrun by White settlers, was reduced to 80,000 acres (320 km2).
White pressure finally forced the Kaw out of Kansas. On June 4, 1873, they packed up their meager possessions in wagons and headed south to Indian Territory to a new reservation. Two weeks later, 533 men, women, and children arrived at the junction of the Arkansas River and Beaver Creek in what would become Kay County, Oklahoma. The Kaw made their last successful buffalo hunt that winter, journeying on horseback to the Great Salt Plains. They preserved the buffalo meat by jerking it and sold the buffalo robes for five thousand dollars.
The Kaw continued their decline in Oklahoma. In 1879, their agent reported that nearly half of their number had died of contagious diseases in the previous seven years. In the 1880s and 1890s, the Kaw derived much of their income from leasing their land to White ranchers for grazing.

My Hidden Hideaway in the Country

IMG_0941

First I need to apologize because the photograph is crooked. All I can say is my muscle relaxers must have kicked in.
I first started this project while living in a hand me down camper. I had just quit working and was tired of living in the city. It took me about 3 months working full time to get the left side done. I did all the pluming, electrical, and Sheetrock by myself. The only help I need was to holdup the rock on the ceiling while I screwed it in. Way out here in the sticks nobody worries about codes or permits because nobody cares.
I had a living room kitchen on the left side and a bathroom and shower on the right side all built with parts I took from the camper. Fully inclosed and insulated. I even had a wood burning stove on the right side with the air piped into the left side. At the time it was all I needed.
I then moved to Oklahoma to work as a manager in a big truck stop on the interstate. A few months later my sister asked me if my mom could move in there to prepare herself for hospice care. She hired some people to refinish the right side with a better sink and shower and put in the sliding doors and a couple more windows and new carpet.
I had been in Oklahoma for a little less than a year when I got the dreaded phone call that my mother took a bad turn and my help was needed to care for her. I quit my job with no notice and was had moved back to the country within 4 days. That’s where I will end this portion of my house in the country.

I am pretty isolated and well hidden from view.

These are old shots The reason I posted them early is as soon as I push the publish button I am on my way out to my old place in the country. I am a bit overloaded with all I have going on right now so I need to go out there and unplug for a few days. I am looking forward to it. No cell or internet service, nothing to distract me. Just me, my kindle, some sun and some much needed long meditation sessions. I will catch up when I get back with those that have caught up with me. I hope every one has a safe and fun holiday. Remember to do one kind thing for a perfect stranger every day you will be amazed at how good it makes you feel.

Mind Dump

I have no idea where this is going. I just need to get this stuff out of my head.

Up until about two days ago we have been under some extreme heat and humidity. Making life miserable because it was so early in the year. Two days ago it broke when a cold front came through. The temp dropped  30 degrees in 15 minutes. Now 90’s then in a few days 80’s where it should be.

I read a tip on line about successful blogging then read a few more. Most of them varied but they all had a few things in common. Blogs should be no more than 250 words, paragraphs should be more than two sentences and you should never post more than one or two pictures in a post because the pictures distract from the words. The other rules are because the average person that reads blogs scans them for key words that interest them they don’t take the time to read every word. I have caught myself doing this many times on some long winded post like I am writing right now.

I just went back and looked at some of my post. I had never used the word count before and a couple of them are close to 900 words. I will try to use these suggestions and see what happens. I had a lot more I wanted to dump out but this puts me at just under 250 words!!

Is The Like Button Addictive

I have only been on this site about 6 or 7 weeks and have all ready run into problems with this little button. First it hasn’t worked on my phone for about 3 days now it just says loading but works fine on my computer.

The like buttons purpose is supposed to be used if you like a post not to boost your stats like quite a few bloggers I have run into seem to use it for. I don’t however have a problem with that they can do what ever they want with their own blogs. A couple of weeks ago I fell into the addiction trap. I would find a blog I was interested in like a couple of pages and leave a comment or 2 and go look for other sites that interest me. I had a few blogger come back to my site and replete what I had done to there site then one of us would start following and the other would do the same. This is where I got into trouble. I had to quit following 2 bloggers yesterday and am thinking about another one. It was getting out of control quickly I would wake up in the morning to 35 to 40 emails full of post these people were making. Some of these people were posting 8 or 9 times a day. Some of those were re post from years back. One person was re posting for other persons site which I think is a nice thing to due but not 15 to 20 post a day. This one I watched closely yesterday and the first re post they did would get 60 or so likes but by the end they were only getting about a third that many.

The reason I started posting on here had nothing to with becoming popular and I actually read the post I use the like button on or comment on. There is no way these power bloggers as I call them can can respond to 70 or more different sites a day and read all of the content unless they spend 24 7 on here.

This has nothing to do with this post but as a side note if you are thing about using windows 8 touchscreen which I do beware this program eats data very quickly even with most of the live tiles turned off I have a 8 GB plan and could easily use that up in two weeks. So I have to use the wifi over at the clubhouse a couple of hours a day and 4or 5 hours during the weekend. If you have a cable connection you will be OK though.

This and That

Am I The only one here who has troubles with their Gravatar. I have tried everything in the help section, I even ran that check my Gravatar program that says wait 5 or 10 minutes. I waited 20 minutes and got nothing. I have deleted the whole thing twice and started over, I just can’t link to anyone else. I finally put my WP link under mine if everyone did that it would make life easier for idiots like me.

I live close to the center of Kansas, for the last two weeks the weather has been in the 70’s and low 80’s. Yesterday summer arrived in full force. The forecast for the next 7 days is in the upper 90’s and 100 with the lows only about 75 and high humidity. This state is starting to have only two seasons summer and winter. I hate this place and still blame my ex for convening me to move back here for my last assignment when I was still in the Army.

The reason I am stuck here requires an explanation. This is not a pity post so please don’t go there, I despise pity and self-pity. I get all of my health care at the VA because I am a disabled vet and its free. I have been seeing this memory expert off and on for two years. She has done many brain scans and way to many 6 and 8 hour memory test only to come up with a diagnose of moderate memory loss of undermined cause. She wanted to do more test and my physiologist wanted to give me more drugs. I got fed up and told them both no I will just live with it. For the first couple of years it used to depressed me and I would get so mad I would trow or kick things to take my anger out on. Now I just laugh about it for the most part and silently call myself dumb ass. I lost my cell phone once for two days and found it in the freezer, now I carry insurance on my phone. I keep a navigation device in my car and have a navigation app on my phone as a back up. That’s so I don’t get lost in the city I grew up in. I have a bunch off apps on my phone to use as reminders and different colored stickups all over the house.

That is the reason I am stuck in this state. I know one person who is going to blast me for putting this on the web. My life for the most part is an open book and everyone I know has this information anyway. It’s not something I am ashamed of it’s just something I have to deal with. I look at it this way, it could always be worse. I could have cancer or be in a nursing home or have a host of diseases worse than this. Like everything else in life you either adapt to the situation you are in or you fall into a deep dark hole that is hard if not impossible to climb out of.

My Latest Gadget

WP_20130607_001

I wrote a post either here or on Facebook earlier about my cutting the cable. I wasn’t watching it that much and the DVR was actually overwriting itself. I haven’t missed it at all in the three months since I moved back to the city. A few days ago I was talking to someone about the upcoming collage football season and it hit me like a rock. How was I going to watch the only sport I actually enjoy without a TV. I couldn’t even go to a sports bar to watch it because it is the OU sooners from Oklahoma.

I went to my favorite place to shop,Amazon.com, and searched for high definition TV antennas. I had read several articles about them in the past and I have to admit I was a bit skeptical to even try one because the stations towers were behind me. This model, pictured above, was a omni directional so I ordered it. I got it three days later, hooked the coax cable to the antenna and then the T and, stuck it on the wall with two pins that were provided. I then turned on the TV and did a channel scan and BAM all of a sudden it had found 28 channels. Twenty of those were in 1080p true high def. I was amazed at the quality of the pictures they were just as clear as I ever had with my dish. All of this from this 40 dollar flat simple antenna. I got all of the major networks, a sports channel and a fishing channel. All of the others I wasnt interested in. Now I can set back and relax knowing in 96 days when the season starts I will be able to watch my favorite sport!
